How to do your baby a good turn:
Moxibustion for breech presentation

A Japanese study published in 2000 confirmed that stimulation of acupuncture points is effective in correcting breech positioning. By studying 357 women with breech presentation they found that the Moxibustion treatment group had a correction rate of 92.48 percent compared to the control group which had a spontaneous correction rate of 73.66 percent. *

What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is an externally applied TCM treatment using a Chinese herb called Moxa (Artemisia argyi), commonly known as
eMugwortf. For
external use Moxa is compressed and rolled into a cigar-shaped herbal stick. Moxa sticks are then lit and held over acupuncture points. The radiant heat produced has the effect of stimulating the point.

How does Moxibustion work?
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, moxa has a tonifying and warming effect which promotes movement and activity. This warming and tonifying effect is utilized to encourage the baby to become more active and lift its bottom up in order to gain adequate momentum to summersault into the head down position.

This technique can also be used to reposition transverse presentation, a situation where the baby¯s has its shoulder or back pointing down, or is lying sideways across the abdomen.

The mechanism of Moxibustion (moxa) treatment is:

  • Increased fetal activity
  • Relaxation of the uterine myometrium (muscle layer) making a more favorable environment for the fetus to move
  • Increased blood flow in the uterine and umbilical arteries

When to start the treatment of Moxibustion?
1. As soon as been diagnosed with Breech Presentation or
2. Fetus is in abnormal position anytime between 29-32 weeks.
The technique is most effective between the 28th and 34th week, up to 36 weeks of pregnancy. The optimal time for effectiveness is 32-34 weeks. Past the 36th week there is usually not enough room for the fetus to turn around.

How many treatments are required?
From 29-32 weeks, one treatment / week
From 32 Weeks onwards, 2 treatments / week is recommended.
From 36 weeks onwards, labour induction with Acupuncture will be recommended.
